Summer Scouting Notes: QB Nick Starkel, San Jose State

Has some arm strength, but it doesn’t really pop on tape. About average. Flashes the ability to throw with touch, but isn’t nearly effective enough doing it. Looks to have improved on this in 2021. Delivers a deep ball nicely with an excellent touch… Smooth, quick release, and solid motion… Not the most accurate passer. Definitely struggles with accuracy, especially the further downfield he’s throwing… Starkel is very inconsistent, but when he’s on he has pinpoint accuracy. Overall, seems to struggle with proper placement and hitting receivers in stride… Doesn’t show too much pocket maneuverability… Shows decent footwork in the pocket. Tends to get proper angles with his throw. His plant stance looks a little bit narrow. Average foot speed… A suitable athlete, but certainly nothing special. He will be able to pick up small gains at the next level. Lacks speed and a lot of athleticism… Tries to force things when under pressure and struggles to make good decisions… For the most part, shows some ability to read pre-snap formations. Does still struggle with identifying basics.
