In a shocking turn of events, the New England Patriots have released quarterback Cam Newton naming 1st round draft pick Mac Jones the starter for week 1. Cam Newton was widely considered the favorite by many to be the starting quarterback heading into week 1. While this move is shocking, one could argue that this is the correct move for the Patriots. Cam Newton has dealt with injuries throughout his career and also has dealt with COVID-19 last season. There are rumors and speculation that Newton’s COVID test controversy last week could have played a role in this surprise release.
There are reports that Newton is also unvaccinated which could potentially cause some concerns within the Patriots organization. This news also potentially limits Cam Newton’s options if he were to potentially sign elsewhere. There are obvious connections to the Washington Football Team as he previously played for head coach Ron Rivera. Newton posted his response to the news on his Instagram story today.
While the move is shocking, this decision will positively impact the New England Patriots in the long run. In the preseason the offense just looked more comfortable with Mac Jones style of play. Jones’s ability to sense pressure in the pocket is something that is comparable to the likes of future Hall Of Famer Tom Brady. Not to mention that Josh McDaniels is used to working with guys like Brady and 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.
