Isaiah Likely Scouting Report

Very decent speed. Still not much better than average overall for the position. Surprisingly nimble and adept at changing directions and making defenders miss. Not particularly explosive. Very quick and efficient with his route-running.

Flashes excellent catchability. Has a good catch radius. Brings in the over-the-shoulder catches. Has the ability to be a receiver at every level of the field. Inconsistent hands. Struggles to create proper catch angles. Catches well through contact. Flashes the necessary concentration to make difficult catches at times.

Not a particularly strong pass blocker. Needs to work downhill for any chance of being an effective blocker. Flashes strong run blocking ability from time to time. Keeps his hands inside but I’d like to see him get higher with his technique to better control the block. He has the strength to drive the defender from the snap, but loses control of the rep the farther he gets into it.

What we want to see from Isaiah Likely in Mobile

  • Isaiah Likely has had some consistency issues making routine catches. We’d like to see him be more consistent this week against the stiffer competition in 1v1’s. Whether he is better protecting the catch point with his larger frame or simply more focused on securing the catch, we think that would be in his best interest to show on the big all-star stage.
  • If Likely has the ability to play as a big slot, we’d love to see it. When matched against linebackers, we don’t see a lot of athletic separation between Likely and the linebacker. We don’t think that he can, but it would be interesting to see if he can create separation underneath simply threatening with his size.

Pre-Senior Bowl projection

Isaiah Likely has the potential to be a mid-to-low tier starting tight end in the NFL and would likely (pun intended) best fit in a system that runs heavy 12 personnel best. His immediate impact would be as a second tight end option who could bring some run blocking ability and a limited instant impact in the passing game.

We like Likely as a fifth/seventh-round prospect, going in the later rounds of the class as a developmental but toolsy prospect. We’ve seen tight ends like Likely go higher, and he can if he shows that he can play effectively out of the slot.
