Phidarian Mathis Scouting Report

Very quick for his size. Was a strong pass rusher and had the capablilty to stunt effectively through the C-gap to still impact the quarterback. Excellent lateral quickness. Changes direction very well, too. Very strong lower body. Gets great drive. An absolute brute at times. Bullied top-tier offensive linemen when 1v1. Has a great first step. Really makes it difficult to stop him. Disruptive on the 1v1’s. Fairly explosive athlete, especially for his size.

Very oftentimes took the double team assignment, at times was contained by three blockers. Didn’t see him win against double teams very often, but Mathis puts up a fight throughout the rep. Flashes strong hand placement. Great quick hands and works well to disengage. Has an excellent stiff arm.

Very solid tackler. Wraps up well and puts his weight on the ball carrier. Pursuit angles are good, for the moat part. Works well off of blocks to close run gaps and collapse on the ball carrier. Typically shows good recognition. Very consistent overall as a pass rusher. Excellent at condensing down the pocket. Works gaps and stunts very well. Excellent effort, doesn’t give up on the play.

What we want to see from Phidarian Mathis in Mobile

• Can Mathis play as a 1-tech at the next level? Hopefully, we’ll get a good glimpse of that in 1v1’s at the Senior Bowl. Specifically, we want to see if Mathis can use his hands well enough to split double teams there and impact the quarterback. He flashed it at Alabama, we want to see how effective he can be with that.

Pre-Senior Bowl Projection

I’ve personally loved Mathis since I laid eyes on him. I spoke very highly of him last year and thought that his tape was some of the best in the class. We think he projects as starter immediately with top ten defensive tackle upside in the league. He will best fit in a 4-3 front, but could potentially play as a 3-tech in a 3-4 as well, though we don’t think he could start immediately in that role.

Because of his projection, we like Mathis as a first-round prospect. His feel for the game is extraordinary and we’re buying in to his upside.
