Bryan Cook Scouting Report
Decent, not great, speed. Has some explosive ability as an athlete. Has some burst to help him recover well. Not particularly strong, but comes downhill with some fire to his step. Changes direction pretty well. Shows the ability to work back into the play if he over-pursues.
Works very well downhill to attack the ball carrier. Decent tackler overall, doesn’t show great wrap up ability. Tends to go low and attempt to take out the ankles of the ball carrier. Shows good pursuit angles. Blitz timing is average.
Very effective in deep coverage. Understands his assignment and sees the play well. Plays solid man coverage for a safety. Attacks the catch point. Has the ability to play against tight ends. Contests the catch point well if he can’t make a play on the ball. Very decent defender in space. Consistently cleans up tackles and makes plays when teammates miss. Flashes good instincts at times. Rarely out of position overall. Really solid recognition. Cook studies a lot of tape and it’s evident on film.
What we want to see from Bryan Cook in Mobile
- Bryan Cook flashed some man coverage ability, but we want to see how he matches up against tight ends and running backs. So far, we’d seen some ability but his assignments were limited by the Cincinnati scheme. We should get a good idea of that in 1v1’s in Mobile.
Pre-Senior Bowl projection
It’s hard to project where exactly Bryan Cook will go. He has the range and is consistently instinctive getting where he needs to go. The question that remains is just how effective can he be of a tackler? That’s not something that we will see so much in Mobile, that’s a part of his game that he will have to develop over time.
We like Cook as a fifth/seventh round projection because of the range that he shows. However, he’s best suited in a system that allows him to play downhill more often than not and offer run support. We think he’s potentially a capable starter at the next level.
