Boye Mafe Scouting Report

Good speed, not great. Good lateral quickness, has the ability to work around blocks. Such a smooth criminal laterally, excellent footwork. Looks almost like he is gliding. Excellent first step. Good explosive athlete. Very strong upper body, really dictates the blocker throughout his rush with how he has to be countered. Didn’t show much ability to work through double teams. Mafe has posted ridiculous weight room numbers.

Would like to see him control tackles better, get lower while engaging ball carriers. Shows very solid pure strength. Very low bend. Excellent in this area of his game. Get’s down low and dirty. Flashes good hand usage. Very strong hands. Has the ability to use a little rip move and swim past the blocker. Not a great tackler, but certainly capable. Tends to go too high. Flashes strong contain ability. Does have a tendency to cheat inside too far at times and doesn’t have the speed to recover.

Smart defender, reads and reacts to the concept very well. Capable of dropping into man coverage against certain running backs effectively. Works through traffic well. Mafe will somewhat slow down when his first move is countered. Struggles to gain back any leverage or consistency after that, and almost checks out of the play.

What we want to see from Boye Mafe in Mobile

  • We want to see Boye Mafe in 1v1’s against this stellar group of tackles that the Senior Bowl is hosting this year. He’s an intriguing blend of speed and power, so we’d like to see which one he will lean on more to win in those situations.

Pre-Senior Bowl projection

Boye Mafe projects best as an edge rusher who can fit both in 4-3 and 3-4 fronts, but would be better suited to play down in a 4-3. He’s almost strictly a pass rusher who doesn’t offer a lot of ability as a run defender, making him a situational pass rusher who would have to start out playing exclusively in a rotation on passing downs.

His natural pass rushing ability will make Mafe an intriguing option for teams, projecting him as a third/fourth-round prospect. We like him as that rotational piece right away where a team will be hoping he can clean up his tackling fundamentals
