Amare Barno Scouting Report
Really has some speed to his game. Athletic ability is off of the charts. Incredible as a pass rusher. Very quick laterally. Has absolute control of his body. It’s mind-boggling to see the moves he can pull off while rushing the passer. Has a good first step. Not great, but can do something off of it, whether that be creating a speed rush or a power rush. Incredible explosion. Such a great athlete.
Lower body strength allows him to push back and build a suitable bull rush. Decent power, just doesn’t control it as well. Not much of a brute at all. Will try to utilize his athleticism to make big things happen. Good balance when coming off the edge. Just a tad bit too stiff. Doesn’t get down low enough on his speed rush so he attempts to counter back inside with an inside spin. Hand usage isn’t great, but Barno just stays active and intense. Doesn’t have a plan when he’s stonewalled and almost moves out of the play. Doesn’t do well with placing his hands.
Good tackler. Wraps up and slings his body for more power and effect. Good hit power as well. Plays excellent contain and spy – will be a valuable defender at the next level for these tools. Does bite inside a bit early against the RPO when he doesn’t need to. Pursuit angles are good, though he can slightly undercut them at times. Shows a good motor consistently on tape. Very solid hustle player. Consistently active and staying with the plays. Plays through the whistle.
What we want to see from Amare Barno in Mobile
- One of the biggest issues with Amare Barno’s film is the fact that he doesn’t have a plan when he comes after the quarterback. I think this is the reason his production is very limited through two seasons. When the defensive line goes into 1v1’s against the offensive line, we want to see Barno come into the reps with a plan, or at least show some resemblance of a plan.
- Barno’s upper body mechanics are so unrefined and it doesn’t allow him to be the instinctive pass rusher that he is. We want to see a couple new moves and see some refinement from Barno in this area of his game.
Pre-Senior Bowl projection
We really like Amare Barno and we think he can really boost his draft stock with a good performance in Mobile. Right now, he’s a situational pass rusher who brings solid run defense to a 3-4 front as a RUSH EDGE. However, he doesn’t appear to be much of a pass defender and his limitations as a pass rusher prevent him from being a three-down player – meaning he will have to wait his turn and develop.
We think Barno projects best as a third/fourth round pick. His athleticism is very evident as soon as the tape comes on, but he has to develop his upper body to become an effective three-down pass rusher. His ceiling is an all-pro caliber player, but it might be a few years before he can get there.
