Jacoby Jones Scouting Report

Decent speed and athletic ability. Lateral quickness is not good. Very lumbery and slow. First step is average, and it doesn’t get any quicker. Average explosion. Good upper body strength. Moves blockers when he needs to with a good swipe.

Average balance. Very, very stiff athlete. Offers no real bend. Doesn’t have the speed to use an effective edge rush either. Wants to use his hands, but lacks the technique to really be effective. Hand placement is so raw and unrefined. Very decent tackler. Tends to use his size and lounge. Shows some wrap up technique.

Struggles at times to get off blocks quickly enough. Tends to cheat a little too far inside when playing contain on the boundary. Good motor throughout the play. Plays through the whistle. Very consistent effort throughout the game. Spent a lot of time at Texas injured over the last couple of years.

What we want to see from Jacoby Jones in Orlando

  • If Jacoby Jones can get into Orlando with some better hand technique, I think that he could really help himself at the next level. He’s a good run defender, but his lack of production throughout his career stems from the fact that he’s average across the board and doesn’t have a defining trait he can lean on. His hands could be that thing. We’d like to see more refinement in his technique.

Pre-Tropical Bowl projection

Jacoby Jones is a limited run defender from the edge who has the versatility to play both upright and from a three-point technique. While his production was severely lacking in his Texas career, he made a living as a contain player, collecting 62 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, and a single sack. His lack of upside as a pass rusher will be a detriment to his NFL chances and his ceiling is a capable backup.

Jones looks like a priority free agent who will be targeted by NFL squads after the draft. He will drift around on NFL practice squads waiting for his chance at the active roster – if he can get past the final cuts.
