Deandre Johnson Scouting Report

Has average speed for the edge position. Flashes excellent body control. Struggles to change direction effectively, but keeps his hips level with the ball carrier. First step is lacking, even when he times up the snap well. Fairly explosive athlete. Above average upper-body strength. Has some push to his game.

Average balance. Typically keeps his feet, shows good ability while utilizing power-style moves. Very stiff off the edge. Shows some ability to get low while working back inside, but doesn’t have great bend while working the outside rush. Flashes some great hand usage to get off of the block. Struggles when his length is neutralized, doesn’t have a countering move.

Good tackling ability. Offers some upside as a run defender. Not a great space defender. Motor is alright, doesn’t tend to pursue plays to the boundary. He’s always played a rotational role that limited his snap count, which has to bring questions up about his stamina.

Pre-CGS projection

Deandre Johnson fits best in a rotational role as an edge pass rusher and looks the part of fitting in a 3-4 and a 4-3 front. He was asked to play both roles in the multiple-front Miami defense last year and looked good in both roles. Either way, he’s a situational player with a limited upside.

We like Johnson as a seventh-round/priority free agent prospect. His lack of snaps is concerning, he never played over 350 in a single season at Tennessee. Teams understand that at best, he will play a rotational role at the next level.
