Derek Stingley Jr scouting report

Speed is good, not great. Fairly effective moving laterally. Keeps his body well balanced. Accelerates quickly and well. Very explosive athlete. Average upper body is effective in his tackling technique, but doesn’t control it well. Very smooth in and out of his breaks. Fluid hips. Does well to change direction quickly and accelerate. Very rarely see him in a position where he needs to recover.

Shows excellent tackling ability and can be an effective boundary defender. A little bit hesitant at times to work inside to the run play. Not overly violent but will get the job done. Looks like he was hesitant to wrap up last year. Good space defender. Reliable tackler 1v1. Fairly consistent in this role. Pursuit angles are typically great. Flashes the ability to shut down the perimeter in pursuit.

Does a great job keeping his hips square and not giving up a step. Not particularly physical in coverage. Prefers to play mirror technique. Tends to get too deep into his zones. Was asked to play deep coverage a well and was typically effective. Perhaps a little bit slow at times to pick up on concepts. Offers decent press ability. Doesn’t show much of a jam technique. Not particularly physical in press coverage assignments.

Pre-Combine projection

Derek Stingley Jr certainly has his share of fanfare, especially since starting as a true freshman during the LSU Tigers 2019 National Championship run. He is a rare talent who can do it all on the back end.

We think Stingley projects as a top-fifteen pick in the 2022 NFL Draft and will be highly valued headed into the future. His pedigree and his talent are both tremendous factors in his professional career. That being said, he will need to clear medicals at the NFL Combine, which could be the only thing that holds him back.
