Josh Paschal Scouting Report
Strengths – Has the ability to play multiple spots. Can line up inside or out if needed. While having a thicker frame, he has a surprisingly quick twitch and explosiveness when he attacks off the snap. Plays with loose hips. Often finds his way getting in between skinny gaps which is impressive for his size. Paschal is a violent rusher, especially with his hands. The pop he gets of linemen who are too slow are knocked off their axels quicker than they know it. Pure run stuffer. If he’s not stuffing a run himself, he’s eating up blocks to create lanes for his rushing mates. He’s a much more effective and determined run defender now than he was as a freshman. High motored at all times. Never takes a play off. Was a team captain in 2020 & 2021.
Weaknesses – Not a finesse athlete. Often relies on his power to bail out his lack of speed off the edge. In 2018, Paschal was diagnosed with malignant melanoma which require many surgeries and immunotherapy which required him to miss most of the season. Lacks an arsenal of counter moves. Something’s is slow to react while trying to shed blocks. His motor is so high at times he tends to play overly aggressive.
Pre-Combine Projection
Currently Josh Paschal is projected a late 2nd/early 3rd round pick. He’s is in a extremely tricky situation seeing that he’s a bit of “tweener” and is going to have to decide whether he wants to stay the same weight and stick to being an edge rusher, or pack on some healthy weight and become a full time inside guy. Paschal has the tools to do either. Surely he isn’t going to impress anyone athletically, but what he does strive in is his high motor, ability to stop the run with effectiveness, and his natural strength and power. Those three things should keep him around the NFL for a long time. Maybe not as a full time starter, but as a main rotational piece on a team that preaches keeping their DL fresh.
