Kevin Austin Jr Scouting Report

Kevin Austin Jr is a 6’2 receiver coming out of South Bend with limited reps and limited production. A culmination of injuries (foot) and a marijuana suspension resulting in him missing 2 seasons with Notre Dame. The Irish were in serious need for receivers with very limited depth in the 2021 season. Austin Jr rose to the occasion, becoming a premium receiver in their offense.

Pros/Strengths: Austin Jr possess a unique clutch factor, highlighted multiple times this past season. His frame and athleticism allows him to win jump balls in the red-zone and make contested catches when his team needs them the most. Austin Jr has a lot to develop, but his ability to high point the ball and come down with it in traffic is certainly his best attribute. Austin Jr’s speed is also something not to overlook, as he is very reliable in the quick game and as a deep threat.

Cons/Weaknesses: Austin Jr’s resume and production is certainly underwhelming. Scouts want to develop players, but they don’t want it to take several years. They want impact guys quick and unfortunately Austin Jr still has a lot to work on. Catching ability, physicality, and speed off the line are all areas in need of improvement. Consistency will be everything for Austin Jr. if he wants to prove to be a reliable receiver at the next level.

Pre-Combine Projection

Expect Kevin Austin Jr to be a Day 3 draft pick. I think he will test well and run in the 4.4-4.5 range, but due to his college career I don’t think the combine will be able to boost his stock up a day. Would be surprised if scouts took a risk on him before Round 4. Kevin Austin Jr is even a risk between rounds 5-7, but expect him to land there.
