We round out the position groups in our 4th installment of Chain Reaction. This time we look at the defensive back seven. A lot of moving and shaking since I started compiling this list. Several DB’s finding destinations and no longer in the portal.

LB’s

Maninoa Tufono, USC

CB’s

Eric Reed, Auburn

Devin Bush, Arkansas

S’s

Enzo Jennings, Penn State

ATH’s

Tyrick McDaniel, Old Dominion

The Reaction:

LB’s

Maninoa Tufono, USC

Possibilities: Hawai’i, BYU, Ole Miss.

Chain Reaction: The home state Rainbow Warriors have to be in the mix for Tufono. With new HC Timmy Chang now in Manoa the buzz around that program and bringing in new guys is on the rise. It remains to be seen if Tufono remains at DL where the USC coaching staff moved him this year or moves back to his recruited and listed position of LB. BYU is reportedly in the mix as well. Sitake has recruited from the island well and Punahou HS where Tufono matriculated is an underrated national power. Transferring to the Sip has become a mantra this portal season and the Rebels have been thrown about as a possible landing pot for Tufono.

CB’s

Eric Reed, Auburn

Possibilities: Louisiana Tech, Houston, Kentucky, Oklahoma St.

Chain Reaction: Reed is an interesting one, and a first for my articles. He has officially withdrawn from the portal though maintains that he intends to transfer. We can assume at this juncture this means he intends to finish his semester at Auburn and transfer in the summer. He will have 3 years to play wherever he lands and is a top quality CB. The Shreveport, LA native could end up at nearby La Tech and new coach Sonny Cumbie but he will certainly have options when he makes a decision. This one feels too far off to speculate too much on but I’d put these 4 all in the race to get Reed.

Devin Bush, Arkansas

Possibilities: Southern, Grambling St.

Chain Reaction: There is some confusion about which of the Bayou Classic rivals Bush will end up at. The New Orleans native has committed to both, most recently to GSU but he still officially remains in the portal. The Tigers lead the way but Bush is good enough to remain on this watch list until we know for sure. He would be a game changer at the P5 level, let alone in the SWAC.

S’s

Enzo Jennings, Penn State

Possibilities: Texas, Kentucky, Michigan St., Pitt, Penn St.(withdraw from portal)

Chain Reaction: Jennings remains one of the highest rated remaining defensive players in the portal. The Michigan native was a top 10 safety recruit in the nation out of high school and offers a well-rounded game to wherever he ends up. His 6’1 and 185 frame may be misleading but Jennings can step up and deliver a blow. Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns appear to have some interest as do Mark Stoops and Pat Narduzzi. The in-state Spartans led by Mel Tucker are trending upwards as well as anyone and could use a solid guy in the defensive backfield as well.

ATH’s

Tyrick McDaniel, Old Dominion

Possibilities: Junior College

Chain Reaction: The buzz around McDaniel is that he will attend a junior college for a year then transfer to another FBS program. We do not believe this is because of grades but rather simply wanting to showcase his talents and land a bigger offer. The Columbia, SC area native projects as a DB.
