Leonard Floyd, A’Shawn Robinson, Matt Gay. Who’s the next Rams free agent signing that will play a big role on this team? The Rams have had to find diamonds in the rough in free agency due to their cap restrictions, and this year is no different. They can create 70 million in cap space through restructures, but do have some in house free agents to take care of first. Now let’s take a loot at some under the radar free agents that the Rams can sign.
Anthony Walker Jr. – ILB – Cleveland Browns
Anthony Walker Jr. is a solid starting linebacker who played with the Browns last season after 4 years with the Colts. Last season with the Browns he notched 113 tackles, a sack and 2 TFLs. Walker Jr. played part of his career with Darius Leonard beside him, yet still produced. He’s struggled a bit with injuries during his career, but when he’s fully healthy is an underrated middle linebacker.
As for his fit with the Rams, I think he could play next to Ernest Jones next year. The Rams linebacker group this past season struggled and is their most glaring weakness on defense. Adding a great cover linebacker like Walker Jr. could help elevate their defense even more. Signing him to a 1 year prove it deal and letting him play besides Donald and Ramsey could be a cheap solution at MLB. (Projected contract 1 year 3.5m)
Will Hernandez – G – New York Giants
Will Hernandez just finished playing through his rookie contract, and it isn’t looking like the Giants will re-sign him. Hernandez wasn’t the best in NY, but played every game when healthy while not being penalized too often. His best year was in 2019 where he allowed 2 sacks and drew 4 penalties during 16 games. Similar to Austin Corbett in 2019, I think that Hernandez could improve with a fresh start on a better line. Corbett, Allen, and Noteboom are all free agents, so the Rams can’t afford to keep all. Should all leave, Hernandez should be a cheaper option with starting potential.
Stephon Gilmore – CB – Carolina Panthers
This one is more of a fever dream than the other two, but the Rams could sign Gilmore to vet minimum for him to try and ring chase. The Rams do have something other teams in free agency don’t, Jalen Ramsey.
Ramsey tried to recruit Gilmore this past offseason during his holdout with the Patriots. Gilmore did have a down year last season mostly due to injury, meaning he could come in at a discount. Gilmore isn’t too far from a DPOY season in 2019, and shouldn’t need to play to that level across from Ramsey. Spotrac estimates a aav of 14.15m a year for Gilmore, but he might take a pay cut to come and play in LA. If Gilmore signs with the Rams, I could see a resurgence similar to Darius Slay in Philly for him.
