Aidan Hutchinson Complete Scouting Report

For an edge rusher, Hutchinson has some speed. Has a good speed rush with his athletic ability. More quick than fast. Lateral quickness has improved tremendously in 2021. Excellent contain defender. Has the quickness to get to the boundary very quickly. Shows very good body control. As a variety of moves to confuse blockers. Very quick, choppy feet. Controls his direction well.

Explosive isn’t a good enough word to describe him. Electric off of the snap. Excellent jump and first step. Incredibly explosive. Moving through traffic and through the pocket looks effortless. Shows good explosion once he commits to where he intends to go. Hutchinson has some real upper body strength. Looks pretty buff. Struggles to complete his wrap up, I think it’s a combination of strength and balance that’s the issue. Showed the ability to throw some big players throughout the year like ragdolls when he needed to. Doesn’t show a lot of lower body drive. Looks like he could build himself better there, too. Yes, he’s a pure brute. Unreal sometimes. Plays with ridiculous intensity.

Pass Rushing Ability

Excellent balance. Does struggle to keep his feet when making a rip inside. Hutchinson’s bend is absolutely ridiculous. Has a solid rip move too that’s difficult to prepare for.

Hand usage looks a little raw, but the upside is there Heavy hands that stay active all through the rep. Crazy hand strength. Powerful upper body allows him to deliver some powerful punches. Uses his length extremely well to help prevent linemen from engaging and locking him up. Hand placement is overall poor. Doesn’t do a lot to help himself when he’s properly engaged at the line of scrimmage.

Defending Ability

Excellent tackler. Really assists in the run game as much as he impacts the pass game. Would like to see him impact the quarterback lower to avoid head contact. Needs to wrap up better. Left some tackles on the field because of his lack of ability there. Solid space defender. Plays excellent contain and reads the RPO/run-option well. Positions himself well to play the ball carrier to either the outside or the inside. Great pursuit angles. Does an excellent job positioning and tracking down the football all across the line of scrimmage.

Excellent motor. Plays through the whistle. Plays with ridiculous intensity. Stays with his assignment through the play and doesn’t give up. You really don’t see Hutchinson take plays off. A lot of his pass rushing opportunities open up because of his motor.

Persona

Hutchinson is a consummate professional. No known off-the-field red flags. Handles media well and is comfortable dealing with them. Missed a few games in 2020 with an ankle injury that required surgery. Outside of that, he’s been very available all throughout his college career. Hutchinson doesn’t really offer much upside outside of learning how to use his hands better. Besides that, he’s mostly a finished product with a high floor and a low ceiling.
